Since we’ve got Memorial day Summer has officially begun. So lets brush up on a few cheap (or not) things you can do to greet the sun with a confident smile.

I’m going to do this is several installment “lessons” and the title of the blog reflects the points here.
1. Summer sun will lighten your hair automatically. Give it a hand by hitting up the salon and giving yourself a fresh, bright summer look by lightening your color or adding highlights that compliment your skin tone now but will still flatter you if you get some sun. Tara Carver at Salon Utopia is a master at subtly lightening and highlighting. While you are in the chair consider losing some of that extra weight (on your head, even Tara can’t help me lose those 5 last vanity pounds..) by asking for choppy, razor-ed layers that allow major movement. This style works for me because if looks sexy and tousled-NOT messy-wen left to air dry. And summer is deinately the season for careless, beachy waves. Just make sure that you baby your locks with all the usual goodies-deep conditioner is essential this season! Swimming, wind, sun and even trying to detangle hair after boating, riding ATV’s or motorcycles will cause breakage.

2. Summer is a great time to wear lighter colors and fabrics. Jersey dresses are my personal go-to’s for casual/dressy evenings out. Though black is always going to be a staple for every season, consider grey or navy. These colors are just as appropriate for business or a night out while syill reflecting the playful feel of summer.
3. I’m a high heels girl. Always will be. But, though ladylike pumps and funky platforms are great with summer dresses, consider a great pair of gladiator flats or adorned flip flops. Those clunky sandals can add weight to an outfit. Of couse heels make women look spectacular, but if you have an outfit that you can live without that extra 3 inches in you shoud give it a try. On a quick stroll through Von Maur’s shoes section I saw a ton or really unique, interesting flats. I’ve even got my eye on a pair or two-hoping they go on sale. I can’t support Von Vaur’s sale sections enough. I never pay full price but get amazing gear there all the time. It just takes patience…
4. Try to lighten your mood as well. Massages and acupuncture don’t usually cost more than a week’s worth of Starbucks. Consider treating yourself. There is a great acupuncture place here in Des Moines..give em a call at: 515-331-8491. I’ve never felt lighter than leaving an acupuncture appointment.
5. In the summer our bodies naturally crave the fresh fruits and veggies that are now in season. Take advantage of the Farmers’ Markets happening all over the city to explore new tastes, textures and flavors. Enjoy fresh fruit juices and jams and smoothies. Try grilling fresh fish, like tilapia and top simply with fresh diced tomatos, garlic, olive oil. Swap out heavy desserts for sorbet with fresh fruit and whipped cream. You’ll feel better and maybe even lose a pound or two-which may give you the confidence to rock that new bikini!
