Now that we’ve discussed a few things that can make your spring wardrobe rock, we need to figure out how to get you the gear.
I know as well as anyone that these are tough times and some days it comes down to priorities-pay the car insurance or spring for a few new dress shirts or sweet, sexy tops. But, my darlings, I have a plan. A plan I, myself will be putting into action as well.
Now, if you read my earlier “Finance Friendly Fashion” posts, you may just remember the Vogue Vision trunk show that I mentioned. That event-hosted by Vogue all last wekend-gave shoppers the chance to get the hottest spring eyewear trends for 50% off.
Now, I can’t swing a deal like that, but it did give me an idea. I propose that you get between 5-15 of your closest girl and guy friends for a “Trunk Show” of your own. Go through your closet and choose clothing, accessories, shoes and handbags that you’ve worn to death. These things must still be in great condition: don’t select items that you’d haul off to Goodwill to make space for more new crap. By all means, DO pack a box of clothes that you can take to Goodwill (and get a receipt for next year’s tax season!) and get the old stuff you never wear-or SHOULD never wear out of the way. Then do a more selective search. Find stuf that’s still in great shape but you are unlikely to wear again. Pick good stuff-it will, for the most part, be your “currency.”An often overlooked, but killer product? Old band T’s. These can be reworked into sweet ass throw pillows, halter tops or even dresses. Don’t know how? The talented girls at Vitae on Grand can help…..
After you’ve picked out the items you’ll be parting with-and it should sting a litle (if you like this stuff, your friends will, too) pack your “trunk.” Grab a suitcase and fill it with your ‘sale’ items. Make sure that they are all clean and pressed. Repair, polish and clean up bags, shoes and accessories. Find cute bowls, trays, etc to display your goods.Even half full bottles of perfume, scented lotions, body washes or sprays you are just plain sick of could be a friend’s new signature summer scent! The options are endless!!
Send out invites (a link to this blog can help keep everyone on the same page) and turn your “shop” into a boutique for a day. Provide table space and assemble some DIY racks for clothing to be hung. Prepare “tags” for each guest with their name on them to attach to their ‘merchandise” with string or safety pins that you likely already have around the house. If you’d like, you can ask folks to pay a cheap cover ($5?) so that you and one or two friends can purchase refreshments.
On the day of your Trunk Show set everything up, help your guests organize and label their items, and let the show begin. You can choose to let people barter or buy the items at the show. You can even put together cards for people who want to lend out items with an agreed upon seling price if the item is returned in poor condition.
And don’t worry about sizes! What fellow teacher Kelli Jo rocks as a tunic top looks great belted on me as a dress. Be creative! And have fun. Take pictures or video and send them in-we’ll post them on this g so that you can show the rest of us how it’s done!
And guess what-I’m planing a trunk show of my own. You can bet that the WP girls will be there-and these are some of the most fashionable ladies in the city. You could score big! Want an invite? Holla. We will, of course, be documenting our Trunk Show with video, still shots, and even “before and afters.”

$trick9 and I used to do this all the time. Only problem was that I often looked like a fat guy in a little coat and Nine looked sloppy and homeless.
* It should be mentioned that we weren’t actually homeless at the time, but Nine was a lot smaller than me during this period.
