A few days ago, I was asked, “What else do you do on your bike besides commute to work and run errands, etc?”
Well, I’m not a racer by any sense of the imagination. I like longer rides, multi-day rides and bike adventures in general, but of the coolest treks you can do (and one that is fairly cost effective) is bike camping.
Bike camping is basically a camping trip via a bicycle. You ride to a spot you’d like to camp at, camp, then continue or head back home. Its really that simple.
So, what would you need for a bike camping trip? The following are a few suggestions based on a typical bike camping run.
- Bicycle (Most important part of bike camping)
- Tent
- Sleeping bag
- Food
- Panniers or some other means of carrying your camping stuff

Surly Long Haul Trucker
Any bike will do, as long as its comfortable to ride for a long distance and you can strap stuff to it. Years ago, the Trek 520 and Cannondale’s touring bike were the quintessential bike for touring. Now, Surly makes a really tight frame. Rivendell is my preferred choice. Masi has a really sweet frame perfect for extended rides. Yet, as I said, anything will do.
