Ladies, it’s tax time.
When I talk to my female friends about things concerning finances, I’m surprised by how many are like me-clueless when it comes to organizing things for tax time.
So I took a hint from “Better Homes & Gardens” and organized a “lifestyle” filing system per their instructions. The idea is to keep clutter at bay by showing you what to hold onto, what to toss, and give you a place to store paperwork that you SHOULD keep.
But, it wouldn’t be “Style Academy” if I just threw some typical folders into an ugly box from Walmart. I used Fabric Glue to cover the portable file box in houndstooth fabric. I also added some favorite artwork (including quotes) from an old daily planner that had some really cool artwork in it that I’d been holding onto. Stuff like that makes organizational tools attractive, quirky, and fun-which makes you more likely to actually USE them. Your tax guy will thank you
I made files for:
-the current month’s bills with a checklist for each bill, what I owe, and when I paid it. I put this list inside a pocket that I cut off an old daily planner holding a small art print I love. That way the list is secured and accessible in a way that makes me smile! Future monthly lists may be written on cute stationary or inspiring quotes will be added. (My finances are sort of depressing, so I might as well find some way to make them appealing to deal with.)
And there is no way I’m the only one!
-My pay stubs, W2′s, misc.
-Tax Deductions. Things like medications, work related things (hair cuts for models..) etc can all be written off. If you get taxed for modeling, you get deductions for maintaining your “look.”
-Auto Records. Any work you have done to your car; oil changes, tire replacements, etc. This will be VERY useful when reselling your vehicle.
-Insurance. Car, Health, etc. Hold onto your policy information so you know what you are covered for.
-Receipts and Warranties. Anything with a warranty should be kept along with the original receipt. Owners manuals can also go here.
This stuff makes life easier. I also added a second section for model/acting related information such as photographer releases, class notes, etc.
This is just a small step on the way to financial responsibility. But, unlike my more regular steps, it is in the RIGHT direction!
