The Curious Case of Benjamin Button is like my first time knocking boots; epic yet intensely personal. This movie could have been a gimmick. And put in less capable hands, I believe it would’ve ended up that way. But all the pieces; Fincher’s directing, great acting, amazing cinematography, and a strong and intriguing story keep it on the level.
Loosely based on an F. Scott Fitzgerald short story, the Curious Case of Benjamin Button tells the story of a man who ages backwards. In the movie, Benjamin is born a wrinkled little baby (imagine one of Bea Arthur’s butt cheeks) but as each year passes, his body gets younger and his mind gets older. It’s this unique perspective that gives the story a great deal of power.
Aside from looking funny, Benjamin Buttons is a man of great character. He takes all of life’s trials in stride including his early years stuck in a wheelchair. He even forgives his dad for leaving him on the steps of an old-folks home. He finds love and adventure despite sometimes being disconnected from people his age who look nothing like him. I feel the movie draws a vivid picture of a life lived fully, albeit in reverse. The similarities between the uncertainty and frustration of being both very young and very old are well portrayed in this film.
I read a lot of reviews praising the supporting cast to no end. And while I agree that they were stellar; my favorite character was the combination of a midget, a CGI face, and Brad Pitt’s voice. It was charming. Isn’t that proof that this film is awesome?
The movie clocks in at over 2 and 1/2 hours but it never felt long to me. The one gripe I have with the movie is the ending. It felt like they zipped right past a very suitable stopping point and tacked on another minute or so. Despite that minor issue, I really enjoyed this film from start to finish. It presents a rich world with interesting characters and at times is very funny. Go forth and watcheth!

Fun Fact: In F. Scott Fitzgerald’s short story, Benjamin pops out a full grown man. That had to set some sort of record for episiotomies.

you mentioned that brad pitt voiced his character from cradle to grave (or grave to cradle?) but here’s another fun fact, kate blanchett did too. go back and watch her scenes as a young girl. hollywood magic! i agree, great flick. i thought this was interesting: http://www.funnyordie.com/videos/1d76506803/the-curious-case-of-forrest-gump-from-fgump44
